Josh Ybanez confident UST can surpass last season's accomplishments

Josh Ybañez had an exceptional rookie year last year for the University of Santo Tomas when he secured both the Rookie of the Year and the Most Valuable Player awards in the UAAP – becoming only the second male volleyball player to achieve such a feat after Marck Espejo.

With his prospects looking bright as a 19-year-old outside hitter, he is firmly motivated to build upon his previous achievements, armed with newfound wisdom and skill.

"To be honest, I don't feel pressured because I know I can surpass what I showed last season. It's just a matter of trusting the coaches and my teammates again. I've already achieved what I needed to achieve; that's it. I leave it to the Lord," Ybañez confessed.

All attention is now on his second year, and the high flyer from General Santos City recognizes the need to put in extra effort to ward off the anticipated sophomore slump. For him, the key lies in the mental aspect and extensive practice.

"It all boils down to what you believe in. It's all about mindset; if you believe in it, it will happen, and if not, it won't," he continued.

"I don't just dwell on the awards I received. I approach things the same way I did when I started, continuing the actions I took last year. If I worked hard last year, I'll simply work harder again."

Following an impressive performance in both the V-League Collegiate Challenge and the UAAP last year, Ybañez and the rest of the Golden Spikers are setting their sights even higher.

"This season, we're aiming higher. We won't settle for silver with the guidance of our coaches. Fatigue, challenges, and pressure are ever-present. However, it comes down to mindset once again. Focus on your purpose, focus on your goal."
