San Beda U fended off UP’s challenge in the fourth and pulled off a 21-25, 25-16, 28-26, 26-24 victory in a big bounce-back from a four-set defeat to Ateneo the first time out in the 2022 V-League Collegiate Challenge, Friday at Paco Arena.
Kevin Montemayor put up a 16-point game marked by 13 spikes while fellow outside hitter Ken Umali scored 15 points off 11 attacks, three blocks and a service ace for the Lions, who tied their victims at 1-1.
San Beda blew three match points before clinching it on an Umali serve that the Fighting Maroons had failed to return.
"We’re happy since we were able to do what we’ve doing in training,” said SBU coach Ariel dela Cruz, who also drew a superb outing from skipper and setter Jerome Lopez, who finished with 19 excellent sets and added two points.
Louis Gamban paced UP with 19 points on 18 attacks and one service ace, while Ranz Cajolo added 11 markers on 10 spikes and a block.
