The Sports Vision Management Group is dedicated to promoting volleyball development in the country. As part of this commitment, they allowed the young team from the City of Sta. Rosa to participate in last year's season of the Spikers' Turf. The City of Sta. Rosa team was preparing for its upcoming involvement in the ASEAN School Games.
This exposure on national TV provided unprecedented visibility, turning standout players like Jade Disquitado, Kevin Montemayor, Yoyong Mendoza, and Andrei Bakil into household names—or more accurately, digital names—sparking conversations on social media.
This exposure also opened doors for them to be scouted and eventually recruited by some of the top universities and colleges in the UAAP and the NCAA. Within months, Montemayor and Bakil found themselves donning the Red and White of San Beda University. Meanwhile, ace player Disquitado currently plays with National University. On the other hand, Mendoza opted to contribute to De La Salle University's journey back to relevance in the UAAP.
Mendoza's decision was influenced by his personal connections. "I chose La Salle because Coach Arnold, who is currently the head coach at La Salle, had also coached my mother and sister during their time in CLRAA in Bulacan. He had been one of my coaches in the past as well."
"Through this same coach, Coach Arnold eventually reached out to my parents and presented La Salle's offers to me. I also felt a strong desire to continue my education and knew that La Salle boasts a reputable volleyball program. Additionally, I had previously played with Kuya Noel, one of La Salle's top spikers, in various leagues, which further influenced my decision to join La Salle."
Having gained valuable experience from his time in the Spikers' Turf, Mendoza recognized the need for continuous improvement as he transitioned to the collegiate volleyball level.
"The experience in the Spikers' Turf significantly contributed to my growth, elevating my volleyball skills beyond those of players my age. However, upon entering La Salle, I had to make further adjustments because the Spikers' Turf and the UAAP represent two entirely distinct challenges. I draw upon my previous experiences to navigate different situations on the court."
As a newcomer, Mendoza currently resides in the shadows of more seasoned players like Kampton and Vince Maglinao. Nonetheless, the freshman remains prepared for action, much like during his finishing kick against his former teammates Montemayor, Bakil, and the rest of the Red Spikers last Sunday.
"At times, I find myself questioning why I must remain on the bench, but I am aware that my time will come. There are aspects of my game that I still need to refine, which my senior teammates excel in. When they require a breather, I am here, always prepared to step in as needed," the emerging star concluded.
