DEFENDING champion Far Eastern University shrugged off a second-set hiccup to secure its second straight win, defeating reigning NCAA champion Arellano University, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, in the 2025 V-League Collegiate Challenge on Saturday at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center in Manila.
The Tamaraws leaned on their middle game, especially during key stretches in the third and fourth sets. A quick hit from Lirick Mendoza pushed them to match point, setting the stage for the clincher.
Arellano fought hard, saving four match points, but Dryx Saavedra ultimately sealed the deal for the defending champions with a transition attack after Mendoza’s earlier attempt was blocked.
"Siguro, breaks of the game lang kasi pinagtranahuhan rin ng Arellano. Yun nga pinag-uusapan namin ng boys. Siguro pagod pa from the tournament. Siguro mind setting ang pinaka-importante naming gawin ngayon," said head coach Eddison Orcullo.
Charles Absin anchored FEU’s front line with 12 points, coming from six attacks, five blocks, and a service ace.
Saavedra delivered a game-high 19 points built on 18 attacks, including the match-winner, while Amet Bituin chipped in 16 markers.
The Tamaraws (2-0) will aim for a third straight win against UAAP rivals National University Bulldogs (2-2) on Sunday at 5 p.m.
For Arellano, captain Jiwen Sinuto and AC Guinto provided the offensive spark, with Sinuto matching Saavedra’s output with 19 points. Guinto and Patrick Osabel added 10 markers each.
The Chiefs (0-4) will look to end their skid when they face De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (0-3) on August 30 at 3 p.m.
