Jelai Gajero's road to form begins with floor defense

After a long and arduous recovery, Jelai Gajero made her highly anticipated return to organized volleyball on Wednesday night, marking a significant milestone for both herself and the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors.

Assigned a defensive specialist role for the 2024 V-League Women’s Collegiate Challenge, Gajero is determined to reclaim her peak offensive form following a grueling year of rehabilitation.

The California Precision Academy standout had been sidelined since last September when she tore her left ACL during the pre-season tournament, an injury that also kept her out of UAAP Season 86.

Stepping back onto the taraflex for the first time, Gajero faced the same venue where her journey was interrupted, but this time with renewed confidence and purpose.

“It’s only been seven months, so I’m still limiting my jumping,” Gajero shared.

“I can jump now, but during games, there are many unpredictable moments, so I’m keeping my jumps to a minimum.”

Her cautious approach reflects her commitment to a safe return while slowly regaining her form.

The Lady Warriors made headlines with a stunning victory over the reigning NCAA champions, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, in their opening match, signaling their intent for the season.

Gajero’s contribution, albeit limited, was noticeable.

She was inserted late in the first and fourth sets during the Lady Warriors’ sweep of the Lady Blazers.

“Wala naman masyadong kaba since hindi naman ako tatalon ulit, so more on floor defense and getting used to the court ulit,” Gajero said.

“Tinatry ko lang yung best ko, kung saan ako makakatulong, go lang go.”

UE assistant coach Obet Vital praised Gajero’s impact despite her limited playing time.

“She’s not fully in; we’re just injecting her, and so far, she made a big difference in the little time she was on the court,” Vital noted.

“She got a pancake, made a couple of dive digs, and had nice servings. She’s starting to come back.”

Gajero’s contributions, including a pancake dig and a couple of key defensive plays, highlight her potential to make a significant impact as she continues her recovery.

Looking ahead, Gajero is eager to reunite with her teammate Casiey Dongallo, who is currently sidelined with a wrist injury. Dongallo’s injury also prevented her from fulfilling her national team duties with Alas Pilipinas women.

“Very excited ako kasi mararanasan na ulit namin na nasa court kaming dalawa,” Gajero expressed.
