Mikko Espartero emerges for FEU

Rookie Mikko Espartero of Far Eastern University (FEU) stepped up when it mattered most, making a significant impact in their Game 1 victory in the 2024 V-League Collegiate Challenge Finals against reigning champions De La Salle University. The 20-year-old outside hitter showcased his talent and resilience, contributing 11 points and nine excellent receptions in a thrilling 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 25-19 triumph over the Green Spikers last Sunday.

“Inaamin ko siguro parang bumaba ‘yung laro ko nitong semis hanggang natapos ngayon,” admitted Espartero, reflecting on his performance in the semifinals against National University, where he managed only six points. “Bumawi lang ako, kailangan ko talagang bumawi kasi siguro sa pressure rin sa coaches na kailangan ko raw mag-step up.”

For Espartero, this moment was the culmination of a challenging journey. Hailing from Tibiao, Antique, he felt the pressure of joining a stacked FEU squad but was grateful for the opportunity to contribute meaningfully. “Sa tulong din talaga ng coaches. Sa pressure din namin talaga na kailangan talaga namin bumawi and kailangan talaga makuha talaga ‘yung championship,” he explained, expressing his determination to rise to the occasion.

The Tamaraws' road to the championship has not been without its obstacles. Espartero acknowledged the rocky start to their journey, stating, “Sabi mo na nga, ‘di smooth ‘yung pagdating namin sa championship pero at least nasa championship at ngayon nilinis na namin. Pero kailangan pang linisin talaga para makuha namin ‘yung championship.” His commitment to improvement is evident as FEU aims to secure the title.

Espartero's talent was recognized early on, scouted by the Tamaraws coaching staff after earning MVP honors at the 2023 Gametime Dinagyang Volleyball Boys’ U18 tournament in Iloilo. He joined the team last year and participated in the 2023 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference, but his journey was not without setbacks. He did not make the UAAP Season 86 roster, which advanced to the semifinals, falling short against the University of Santo Tomas despite holding a twice-to-beat advantage.

Adjusting to the rigors of college volleyball was not easy for Espartero. He recalled facing significant challenges, including a bout with the flu immediately following his first practice with FEU. “Siguro nung una, parang syempre galing probinsya ako tapos hindi pa ako sanay sa city life. Nakakatawa pero nagkalagnat ako, nagkasakit ako tapos sa first training ko nagkalagnat ako, nagkatrangkaso ako. Pero day by day, nasanay naman ako,” he shared, emphasizing his determination to overcome the initial hurdles.

Despite the early struggles, Espartero has emerged as a key contributor for the Tamaraws in their V-League campaign. With the championship within reach, he recognizes the need for continued improvement. “Sabi ng mga coaches na kailangan pa linisin, especially sa service at receive. ‘Yun talaga ‘yung kailangan namin, ‘yung kulang namin na kailangan linisin. Konti lang ‘yung mga errors pero sa service receive ‘yun ‘yung especially para sa akin,” he said, showing his focus on refining his skills for the crucial games ahead.
